Is the Patriot Act Too Much?

16 year old Ashton Lundeby is being held by federal authorities hundreds of miles from home for allegedly making a bomb threat (and that is all we know). According to his mother they all were at church when the bomb threat happened. I don't know what all the facts are in this case, but what bothers me is the lack of access for the mother and I would imagine lawyer. Where is due process here? If this kid is innocent, then I would say that he should sue Obama's ass off as well as the FBI. All the Authoritarian Right, like Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Curtis Sliwa said the Patriot Act is a fine thing as if you are not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about. Really? For them, I guess it depends on who wields it, or is it always good? We don't don't need the Patriot Act as we have the Second Amendment and the FBI and other government agencies can use existing laws to go after real threats. When is enough, enough? Right now Thomas Jefferson's spinning is powering Virginia.

Thank you for reading this blog.

I kinew from the moment the Patriot Act was enacted, that Democrats would demonize it while still in the minority, yet use it as a tool of tyranny when they regain power. Look for more PA abuse from the left, while the MSM looks on with adoring eyes.

Not sure how to feel about this one. A lot stuff here seems to be based on "Annette Lundeby says..."

I might dig a little deeper on this one. Thnaks for the post, though!

The media is ignoring a lot of stuff. Glenn Beck may be correct. Obama is a progressive. While there are differences between Progressives and Socialists, in the end it doesn't matter. They are both big government authoritarian philosophies that preach people are incapable of taking care of themselves, only the collective are... What we are missing here is that Obama is not going to use outright totalitarian policies, but rather a coercion that is more subtle and by the time you figure out you are trapped it is too late. He is not hitler, but more like A Brave New World or THX 1138. The question they will ask is, why wouldn't you want that way, as if you are mentally ill...or from another planet. The use an elitism to gaslight people into conforming and unfortunately, many people that won't think for themselves just want to be on the winning team.

I agree. But generally speaking, these guys get the perp walk and some publicity. It really was ignored by most media. You'd think the ObaMessiah would want to show how well he is protecting us. If the kid did it, I think he needs to be adjudicated. Thing is, kids make bomb threats all the time and you don't see them carted off like that. Something doesn't smell quite right.

You've got to get some Rule 5 action up here!

Yeah, but it has to be relevant and depending on the article, I may like to develop my own thoughts...That being said, it would work wonders for my hits. I have a limited amount of time, so what are your suggestions?

PATRIOT Act is awful. I really hoped Obama would cancel it... I tell you it is my first big dissapointment about him...

Hector:
I think he finds it useful. It gives the government more power than they deserve and I bet he will use it to HIS advantage. Have you noticed that we still have people in Iraq and prisoners in Quantanamo. Obama has gone back on his word many, many times already, and the press has done nothing to illustrate it.

Well, he has tried to release those in Guantanamo, hasn't he? At least Dondero is making quite a fuzz about that. Also, his torture prosecutions, I think, are a good idea. I don't remember him saying he'd cancel the PATRIOT Act, but think he should. That is consistent with what he has promised.
I agree, the PATRIOT Act gives the government too much power.

I don't think you will see torture prosecutions, although I saw today they want to use tax money to pay for resettlement of these guys. he may close quantanamo, but I don't think he'll be out of the middle east any time soon. May be he'll rent the detainees the lincoln bedroom.

William,

Yeah, I think a lot of people understood that the PATRIOT ACT would be dangerous regardless of which party was in power. The media has been complicit in this from the very beginning. There were lots of abuses of power that never got much attention from the media. It's no different now.
