The Nature of Existence

This movie is very much worth watching and I endorse it without qualification. You can stream it through Netflix.

"Stood in firelight, sweltering. Bloodstain on chest like map of violent new continent. Felt cleansed. Felt dark planet turn under my feet and knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night.

Looked at sky through smoke heavy with human fat and God was not there. The cold, suffocating dark goes on forever and we are alone. Live our lives, lacking anything better to do. Devise reason later. Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves, go into oblivion. There is nothing else.

Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose.

This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It is us. Only us.

Streets stank of fire. The void breathed hard on my heart, turning its illusions to ice, shattering them. Was reborn then, free to scrawl own design on this morally blank world. Was Rorschach."

- - - Rorschach, The Watchmen (1986)

Many would disagree. Not only would they use faith to explain what they do not know, but use it to refute what they do know. I say lets start with what we do know from what is provable, not what someone "divined" from the metaphysical, which is no different than an opinion. We all have all sorts of opinions, but they don't always stand up to reason. Then you have to ask why someone would write, promote and even enforce fantastical views or opinions.

Because people are self-centered a-holes who want attention. "Look at me! I saw God in my grilled cheese!"

The words of Rorschach ring true:

---- "Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose." ----

Yes, but did you eat the grilled cheese sandwich? If you did, how dare you eat god!. Again, it worries me more when people disregard fact or their own observations for metaphysical explanations or some other contrivance. It's that they rather believe something based on something unseen or proven than believe their own senses. I would ask, WTF is god doing in a grilled cheese sandwich? Then I would say I hope he was good. :)

The reason we search for meaning in life many times is recognition. We are a self-centered lot, but we also have a drive to not only perpetuate our species, but ways of thinking. This "Will" is what causes many of our problems. Ultimately, it becomes might makes right, but disguised as some ecclesiastical or political superiority. May be it's just who has the bigger club and/or who is more ruthless.
