A Johns Hopkins University student killed an apparent burglar with a samurai sword after discovering the man in his garage, police said Tuesday.
Baltimore, Maryland, police received a phone call shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday about a suspicious person, and an off-duty officer arrived at the scene with campus security, city police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
When authorities arrived, they heard calls for help and for police, he said. They discovered a suspected burglar with a severed left hand and severe lacerations to his upper body, Guglielmi said.

Only a college student would leave someone alive while using a Katana. hoho
BTW: It's the student "who" or "to whom". It's incredibly impolite to refer to a person as a thing.
That = it
Personally, I also consider it evil to refer to men and women as the nouns "male" and "female". Such is the language used in reference to animals. (i.e., buck and bitch) I'm a moralist when it comes to human dignity, though.
You are right about 'that" but what the context of male and female are here I am not sure. As far as the student's efficacy with the sword, it probably was a cheap copy and/or he didn't know how to use it. The hand would not be my first choice. Shomenuchi or yokomenuchi would be.
I still have a Katana, Bokken, and Jo from my Iaido and Aikido days. Preferably though, a 45 would be more effective in case of intrusion from a thug. ;)
I have a Bukuto, or Bokken too in some sort of oak. The .45 is another story.
